I chose a gothic image to illustrate my romance novel A Suitable Lord.
My novels are Regency romances with a theme. In this one the theme is spying – the intelligence gathering that went on between Britain and France after Waterloo.
At that time British troops were occupying France, not a very comfortable prospect for the French, and traitors in Britain were plotting to depose the monarchy, so spies were definitely abroad.
Against this backdrop the romance between Lady Annabelle and the dashing Lord Grey is beginning to blossom. Meanwhile, cousin Harriet is playing with fortune-telling cards and coming up with some rather startling predictions. I think this lovely image really captures Harriet and the atmosphere around her card games.
Annabelle’s betrothed, the earl, is involved in some risky business of his own. Who will Annabelle choose? The safe and sure earl, Lord Beau, or the mysterious and possibly quite unsuitable Lord Grey?
